Beauty in a Surreal World

It's the way Swedish artist Linn Olofsdotter makes her illustrations flow that really blows me away. Using a perfect combination of color and contrast, she creates a surreal world decked out with beautiful flowers.

Olofsdotter explored many mediums before solidifying her career in the illustration field. After getting her education in both advertising and graphic design in Europe and the US, she moved to Brazil to start up a motion graphics studio along with her husband and creative partner. She currently works independently creating artwork for a number of clients in the fashion, advertising and editorial fields.

Experiencing Nature

Gregory Euclide is an artist and teacher living in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. “Discontented with the flat surface of traditional landscape paintings, he began exploring the relationship between experiencing nature with the body and creating art objects that depict that experience. It is in that transfer, where he takes delight, manipulating cultural codes and blurring the boundaries between nature and artifice.”

Check the Relief serie which are technically complex in both execution and composition as well as inspiring in its esthetics.

Master of Miniatures - Nikolai Aldunin

Can you imagine how steady your hand must be to create one of these miniature masterpieces? One breath could literally destroy an entire collection...

Coined the master of miniatures, Russian artist Nikolai Aldunin works between the beats of his heart, in order to keep his hands perfectly still. Using superglue, syringes and toothpicks, he creates works of art so tiny, a microscope is needed to see them.

Aldunin's work naturally leads to some frustration. While crafting a miniature rifle, he lost the weapon's butt after having worked on it for two weeks. "I had a sit-down and a smoke and calmed down," he said, then decided to start all over again. "You musn't get into a state or worry. Everything that you feel in your soul is transmitted to your hands."

25 Magnificent Modern Day Movie Illustrations

While putting together this post, I had a hard time with the title. I was going to include the words retro or vintage but then I thought - Are most of these retro or are some of these modern? Here was my conclusion: While some of these illustrations have that retro-feel, most are a modern take on a movie classic.

What these artists have done so well is take a particular scene or character and create a visual representation of the movie. Most of the time, rather than bombard us with visuals, they ask us to draw on our experiences. From Olly Moss's incredibly simplistic black and red movie posters to Tom Whalen and Brandon Schaefer's more colorful, retro-inspired art, I hope you enjoy this collection of some of the most cleverest and coolest retro-modern movie illustrations around!

Kurniawan sublime

Ronald Kurniawan is inspired by ideograms, syllables, letterforms, beasts and heroic landscapes. He continues to create a visual language where the wilderness and civilization could merge happily together.

With the belief that the sublime and nuclear age could coexist, he paints romantic environments and breaks the quiet scene with juxtaposed imagery where wild creatures inhabit fantastically colorful and detailed universes.

“All Work And No Play Makes Jack A Dull Boy” print @ Last Exit to Nowhere

While goofing off at work, I was able to find an amazing t-shirt company based in the UK “Last Exit to Nowhere”. Along with having an insane amount of shirts based on some of the best cult movies imaginable, they also have a limited edition print to be had. “All Work And No Play Makes Jack A Dull Boy” is a screenprint based on that exceedingly chilling scene in Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 masterpiece “The Shining”. It never occurred to me how great of a print this would make until I saw it on this site. This screenprint is 16.5″ x 23.4″ on natural white paper with water based ink, signed and numbered in an edition of 50 for around $64. This print is does not come framed, the image just shows what it will look like all framed up.

Mom & Popism in NYC

If you’re in the New York City area you should drop in to see Mom & Popism, an exhibition presented by Gawker Artists. The show, curated by Billi Kid, is a reinterpretation of the book Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York by James and Karla Murray . The two artists’ photographs are enlarged and depict unique storefronts that have slowly disappeared from the urban landscape they used to define. Located on 210 Elizabeth Street, it’s open to the public for one day only on August 15th, but personal appointments can be made through the end of August.

“Skull Study” print by Brian Ewing

Brian Ewing has just released a new giclee print. It’s based off of a skull study drawing that he did a little bit back. The original sold instantly, so for those that missed it here is another chance. The print is 5″ x 7″ on German Etch Watercolor paper, and is all framed (8″ x 10″) and matted. The print is signed and numbered in an edition of just 10 for $45.

The print quality looks outstanding, and seems to have retained all of the qualities that graphite drawings have. Head on over and get it here, won’t last long.

Shepard Fairey on His Latest Campaign Poster

When ARTINFO spoke with Shepard Fairey this week, he took a moment to vent about the usual coverage of him in the media: that it’s sensationalist and attention-grabbing, and lures people in with flashy headlines and drama (Fairey’s a Plagiarist! Fairey Arrested!). But is what the increasingly popular artist, currently being celebrated in a touring midcareer retrospective now at the Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston, does with his art — distractingly graphic, alluring, and oh so easy on the eye — so different? He admits here that he uses his skills as an artist to bring to people’s attention issues they might not have explored on their own. The distinction, perhaps, is that while the media are trying to “get eyeballs on” their products, as he says, Fairey really does seem motivated by ideals (that public space should be reclaimed from advertisers) and causes (in the last year he’s done work for everything from MoveOn.org to Feeding America to Adopt-a-Pet) rather than profit or fame. Not that he hasn’t earned both.

His latest project is a poster, created in the same style as his ubiquitous Obama Hope image, of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese dissident and rightful, democratically elected leader of the Southeast Asian country, who is currently under house arrest, and has been in and out of house arrest and prison since 1988. ARTINFO spoke to Fairey about the poster, the cause, and the power of art.

NO!

NO! typographic organic illustration.

Organic and structural typographic illustration, created with Faber Castil and Rotring technical pens. A mass of tangled branches and coral-like fans entwined with sharp structural forms. A sparrow hides amongst the branches guarding her eggs. Hidden amongst the elements is the words ‘NO!’ – this can be seen best via the development images – meaning hidden amongst the mass. Set to be a limited run screen-print.
